Pipewell Progress to date 22.5.11

The size of the problemFollowing the successful bid to the East Cornwall Local Action Group for funding to carry out the project we were also pleased to receive cashflow funding of £6,000 from Cornwall Development Company. This money enables us to pay invoices and then to claim the retrospective funding from ECLAG.

Our first step was to commission our ecological survey and this is being undertaken by Hutchinson Ecological Associates. To date many slowworms have been found and one grass snake, so far there have been no dormice.

We have also had two working parties, one on 14th May when we made a start on the balsam pulling in the area near the road (to be clear of any breeding birds) and also put dye into the watercourses as they disappeared underground to find out where they came out. On 21st May we started pulling balsam on the lower area of bog. This was an ideal opportunity due to the very dry spring we have had and also clear of breeding birds.

During June we shall have working parties on both Saturdays and Sundays commencing 4th June in an effort to clear the area before the balsam produces seed.
